Chemical Tests

Lesson 2  Investigating Unknown Solids: Getting Ready

Scientist

Person who is doing scientific work. How? Studying science, posting questions and/or problems and finding out answers and/or solutions by making observations, doing experiments and thinking about the questions or problems and discussing with other scientists until the answers or solutions are found.

Detective

Person who is doing investigative work. How? Given a case of mystery or puzzle or missing things or missing person or crime and solving it, sometimes using scientific methods or work with scientist to solve the case.

Chemicals

Materials that have been studied, identified and given a name, sometimes described by a chemical formula, like water, H2O or Quartz, SiO2

What to learn? Five Chemicals
How? 1. Gather information about the unknown and solve the mystery. (Use senses with tools to observe things, in Science, observing features and properties: color, appearances, shape, size, weight, smell,...) 2. Listen to teacher and discuss with team (Use words to describe what you have observed (in Science, characterizing or characterization) and name them if possible (in Science, defining or definition). 3. Handle chemicals carefully (safety is important), Put the 10 large color dots on the jars (matching color on the lid and the jar) for the 5 unknowns and put the 5 small color dots on the measuring spoons (This helps you to remember things and not cause contamination or mix-up) 4. Make observations and write down in your notebook. (Discuss with class/team and write riddles and cinquain poems)
